That's me

The dog of Hamburg dog trainer Jana Speitmann often wears a muzzle: partly because it is necessary, but also because it is important to maintain consistent training.

My name is Jana and with SENFHUNDE HAMBURG I have fulfilled a lifelong dream. Dogs have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, but my passion for working with them professionally was ignited by our rescue dog, Nana.

Why Is a Muzzle Useful for Every Dog?

A muzzle is not a sign of a “problem dog” – it’s a sign of responsibility. Every dog, from puppy to senior, should learn to wear a muzzle. Here’s why:

  • Vet visits: Even the gentlest dog may snap when stressed, in pain, or afraid. A muzzle protects the dog, the vet, and everyone involved – without escalating the situation.

  • Public transport: In many cities, muzzles are mandatory on buses and trains. With a well-fitted, positively trained muzzle, travelling is calmer for everyone.

  • Accidents and emergencies: Injured dogs are often frightened and unpredictable. A muzzle offers protection and allows faster, safer help.

  • Safety in training: Especially with behavioural issues such as lead reactivity or resource guarding, a muzzle ensures safety and makes effective training possible.

  • Prevention: Many situations are easier to handle if your dog is muzzle-trained – even if they rarely need to wear one.

At my dog training school in Hamburg, muzzle training is not just for so-called “problem dogs” but a recommendation for every human–dog team.

Muzzle: Function, Fit, and Selection

A muzzle is a safety tool – and it must fit properly. Different models are available, and they need to match your dog’s size and muzzle shape. In my Hamburg training sessions, I support you in choosing the right one.

Key points:

  • Secure fit: The muzzle should sit safely, but still allow panting and drinking.

  • Material: Plastic, metal, or Biothane – it must be both sturdy and comfortable.

  • Model choice: Open basket muzzles are ideal in most cases, as they don’t restrict breathing or communication.

The Training: Step by Step Towards a Relaxed Muzzle Wearer

Muzzle training should always be stress-free and positive. In my Hamburg dog school, through one-to-one training, we work step by step so your dog learns to accept the muzzle:

  • Positive association: Linking the muzzle with rewards – like treats and praise.

  • Short introduction phases: At first, just seconds of wearing; later, gradually extended.

  • Movement practice: Using the muzzle in everyday scenarios – sitting at the vet, waiting on the train.

Through targeted one-to-one sessions, I ensure that the muzzle becomes neutral or even positive for your dog, rather than a source of stress.

Why One-to-One Muzzle Training Works Best

At SENFHUNDE Hamburg, I offer muzzle training exclusively in individual sessions. The reason is simple: every dog is unique. Some are quick to adapt, others need more time. One-to-one training allows us to tailor the pace to you as a team.

Why Muzzles Are Positive – And Why We Must Break the Stigma

A muzzle does not mean a dog is dangerous.
It shows that the owner is responsible and prioritises everyone’s safety.

I am committed to changing the perception of muzzles – through education and positive training.

A dog that can wear a muzzle is more flexible, safer, and more relaxed.

Especially in Hamburg, where many dogs live close together, muzzle training contributes to harmony.

At my dog school in Hamburg, I’ll show you how useful – and easy – it can be to teach your dog to wear a muzzle without stress.
