Why choose Happily Home Alone?

Simple, scientifically based.

Happily Home Alone is a straightforward yet highly effective course, built on the scientific foundations of classical conditioning and positive reinforcement. It is grounded in current research and is continuously refined to achieve the best results for you and your dog.

Why choose Happily home alone?

You may also leave your dog alone during the course.

Other methods for separation anxiety suggest never leaving the dog alone at all during training until they have fully learned to cope.

With this method, however, you can still leave your dog alone with the right support – while at the same time teaching them to feel safe and comfortable during your absence.

Why choose Happily Home alone?

super easy to implement.

In just ten simple steps, you will learn how to teach your dog a calm response to your absence through targeted conditioning and positive reinforcement.

Why traditional methods so often fall short…

Science never stands still – and neither does our understanding of “being left alone”.

For many years, training mainly consisted of:

  • Desensitisation: repeatedly going in and out in tiny steps.

  • Visual cues: letting your dog know you are about to leave.

  • Conditioned relaxation: specific places or signals designed to convey “relaxation”.

Anyone who has tried this knows:
It is tedious, slow, and often frustrating.

If you’d like to dive deeper into why and how I have adjusted my approach, why science never stands still, and what LIFE has to do with it – click here.

>> How can you recognise a reputable dog trainer in Hamburg if your dog needs to learn to stay home alone? A professional dog trainer or behaviour consultant in Hamburg is characterised by an individual, science-based approach tailored to you and your dog. Especially when it comes to separation anxiety and separation-related stress, you should look out for the following: Your trainer explains clearly what separation anxiety and separation stress are – and how to distinguish between them. A thorough analysis of your dog’s behaviour is carried out before training begins. Physical or medical causes are ruled out in advance (e.g. by a vet). Training is broken down into small steps and progresses at your dog’s pace – without overwhelming them. Your dog should always feel safe and comfortable during training and enjoy the learning process. Punishment, aversive stimuli, pain, or deliberately overwhelming situations have no place in the process. A reputable trainer works in an interdisciplinary way – and does not rule out the possibility that, in severe cases, involving a veterinary behaviourist may be beneficial.

>> Is behaviour therapy useful if my dog cannot stay home alone? Yes, absolutely. Especially for dogs with severe separation anxiety, traditional dog training is often not enough. Qualified behaviour therapy is: Science-based and takes into account learning behaviour, emotions, and stress physiology. Step by step – just like in specialised medicine, progress is gradual and precise. Individually tailored – no two dogs are alike, and the causes of anxiety can vary greatly. If your dog suffers from a true anxiety disorder, they need more than “just training”. This is where we combine training with behaviour therapy – so your dog can learn to stay home alone in a calm and lasting way.

>> How much does a dog trainer cost if my dog needs to learn to stay home alone? The costs vary greatly – and depend very much on the severity of your dog’s separation anxiety. Since training often runs over several weeks, I have developed my online course Happily Home Alone: Price: €295 Includes: 11 online sessions of 20 minutes each Duration: 8 weeks of intensive, individual training This way, costs remain manageable, you have a clear structure – and we take enough time to help your dog step by step.

>> Is separation training also possible online? Yes – my course Happily Home Alone has been deliberately designed as an online programme. This brings several advantages: Your dog trains in their familiar environment – without the added stress of travelling to new places. We meet for 11 × 20-minute online sessions – short, focused training units that are easy to fit into everyday life. You receive individual support, feedback on videos, and clear training plans. This ensures that your dog learns to stay home alone exactly where it matters most: in your own home.

>> How long does it take until my dog can stay home alone calmly? That varies from dog to dog. The key is to proceed step by step and at your dog’s own pace. In my 8-week programme you will receive: 11 online sessions of 20 minutes with me a clear training plan that adapts individually regular feedback and adjustments based on progress Many dogs already make noticeable progress within the first few weeks – and gradually learn to stay home alone in a calm and relaxed way.

Separation Stress in Dogs – When Your Dog Can’t Be Left Alone
Dog Training in Hamburg

The dog of dog trainer Jana Speitmann: a sleeping and relaxed dog.

Separation stress is one of the most common problems dog owners face in the urban environment of Hamburg.
Many dogs find it overwhelming to be separated from their people, which may result in loud protests, destructive behaviour, or clear signs of anxiety.

The good news: this challenge can be overcome. With professional dog training in Hamburg and targeted separation anxiety training in Hamburg, you can help your dog build trust and learn to stay home alone in a calm, relaxed way.

Worries and thoughts I had back then:

>> What is separation stress? Separation stress occurs when a dog is unable to cope with their owner’s absence. Unlike boredom, which results from a lack of mental and physical stimulation, separation stress is a serious emotional strain. Some dogs panic as soon as they notice their owner preparing to leave the house. Others only show signs of distress once the door closes behind them. Typical symptoms include: Barking, whining or howling: often immediately after the owner leaves. Destructive behaviour: damaging doors, furniture, or even their own crate. Loss of housetraining: urinating or defecating indoors despite being house-trained. Excessive stress: appearing tense, heavy panting, or excessive drooling.

>> Why can’t some dogs stay home alone? The causes of separation stress are varied. Some dogs are naturally more sensitive, while others have had formative experiences that make them more vulnerable to stress when left alone. Common triggers include: Lack of habituation: dogs that never learned to stay alone during their early months. Traumatic experiences: especially rescue dogs or those that have had to change homes frequently are more prone to separation stress. Excessive attachment: when a dog develops an extremely close dependence on their owner. Sudden changes: moving house, a new job, or other major shifts in daily life can trigger stress.

Management strategies: We adapt your dog’s environment to create safety, e.g. safe spaces or calming sounds. Separation Training Hamburg – Your Path to More Freedom

The goal of training is not only for your dog to remain calm and relaxed when left alone, but also for you to be able to leave the house again without worry.
At my dog training school in Hamburg, I support you with a science-based and needs-oriented approach that delivers lasting results.

>> Hilfe, mein Hund zerstört alles, wenn er allein ist! Ein häufiger Begleiteffekt von Trennungsstress ist destruktives Verhalten. Möbel, Türen und sogar Wände bleiben nicht verschont. Dieses Verhalten ist nicht Ausdruck von Boshaftigkeit, sondern ein Zeichen purer Verzweiflung. Im Rahmen meines Hundetraining Hamburg erarbeite ich mit dir Strategien, um dieses Verhalten gezielt zu reduzieren.

>> Do I have to give up my dog if they cannot stay home alone? For many owners, the thought of parting with their dog is heartbreaking. The good news is: with structured training and professional support, in most cases you do not have to take this step. At my dog training school in Hamburg, I focus on strengthening the trust between you and your dog and guiding you as a team through this challenge.

Practical tips for your everyday life

In addition to training, there are practical strategies that can help ease your dog’s stress:

  • Build rituals and give signals (showing and naming): Many dogs feel calmer when they know in advance whether they are coming along or not. This creates predictable expectations and greatly reduces stress.

  • Create safety anchors: A chew toy or a blanket with your scent can have a calming effect.

  • Provide mental and physical stimulation: A well-exercised dog is often a more relaxed dog. Structured walks or training sessions at my dog training school in Hamburg can help.
